Eminem : Relapse
Highly anticipated 2009 album from one of the most successful Rap artists in history. He's sold more albums than most Rock and Pop superstars. He's a Grammy winner. He's an Oscar winner. He's been on the cover of practically every music magazine since his debut album dropped in 1999. Now, 10 years after The Slim Shady LP, Eminem marks his 10th anniversary as a Hip Hop hurricane with Relapse, yet another skillful collaboration with Dr. Dre. Features the single 'Crack A Bottle' (which features Dre and 50 Cent). The first standout track is the second official single from the album, “3 A.M.” The track finds Em going back to his twisted “The Slim Shady LP” days and has Eminem rapping from the perspective of a drug addicted serial killer, reminiscing about previous murders and battling his own sanity. The song does provide some less than positive imagery, but also sees the rapper unleashing a lyrical onslaught on the English language and structure by rhyming the middle of sentences with one another and using his famous story line from. Another of the standout songs on the album is “Beautiful”. The song is much slower than the majority of the album and with a chorus with lines such as “in my shoes, just to see/what it's like to be me/I'll be you, let's trade shoes/just to see what id be like/to feel your pain, you feel mine/go inside each other's minds/just to see what we'd find.” it finds Mathers in a mind state similar to that of “Stan” or “Lose Yourself” and telling a story that reaches out to his fans.
Relapse acts as a concept album as Eminem relapses into his alter-ego and his true self, detailing the void his absence left in hip hop, what he’s been up to as well as his bouts with pill addiction. The cinematic feel of the album allows it to flow well as a whole (the only mishap being the questionable inclusion of obvious Detox reject “Must Be The Ganja”). Lyrically, Eminem is as sharp as ever, proving that the lackluster Encore was a fluke (or an intentional brick) and showing no signs of complacency while his experimentation with different flows on cuts like “Stay Wide Awake” and “3am” aid the argument that his is arguably the best in the business.
